Peter Wayne Hystad
1942 – 2014
Peter Wayne Hystad passed away on November 16th, 2014 in Vernon, BC. He was born in 1942 in Edmonton, Alberta, the second son to Ruth and Perry Hystad. After Harold and Peter came Lawrence, Ken and Joyce.
Peter grew up in what was then the small town of Grande Prairie, Alberta. He had an idyllic childhood that he often reflected back on in later years: climbing trees, building forts, playing cops and robbers, and then coming home covered in dirt and smiles for a good supper cooked by our Mom.
Dad moved the family and his sawmill to Valemount, BC, an even smaller small town. There, Peter worked in Dad’s sawmill in the summer and boarded at a high school in Kamloops. He made many friendships both in Valemount and at school that lasted a lifetime.
Left to mourn him are his brothers and sister, their spouses, and their children: Hal, Ken and Melanie; Sheri, Lana, Dawn and Cindy; Shawna and Perry; and Yarden and Sharon. Peter never married, but loved and spoiled all his nieces and nephews without any reservations. They were his children too. They were all special to him in their own unique ways.
Peter was a rock in caring for our Mom after Dad passed away in 1994. He always said that he had such a happy childhood – it’s pay back time! He made sure that her every need was met, and after she moved into a senior’s home in 2004 – he visited her every day, bringing treats and love. He often would take her out for spins in his sports car on a sunny day, something that Mom really cherished. The family wants you to know, Peter, that we will carry on for you – Mom will be well loved!
Lastly, Peter had a heart of gold. He was kind and generous, and always there if you needed him. He was a man that lived simply – but not a simple man. He had a sharp intellect and an even sharper wit. He couldn’t resist making jokes, and even though we sometimes groaned, we mostly laughed! He accepted and loved all the beings on earth – from people to animals without judgment or criticism.
If you knew our brother Peter, to honour him – be kind to others, reach out to help someone who needs it, and make sure to tell those you love that you love them. Peter will be so missed.
Rest in peace dear brother!
A celebration of Peter’s life for family and friends to follow on Saturday, December 27th, 2104 at the Coldstream Women’s Institute Hall from 1:00 to 4:00.
