June 27, 1938 - July 3, 2022
Peter John Alfawicki passed away on July 3, 2022 after a short illness. He was the son of John and Sophie Alfawicki, who emigrated from Ukraine. John worked at the Vernon Fruit Union and Sophie was a seamstress.
Peter greatly valued knowledge and learning. He spent his early life and education in Vernon. He still had friends he knew from childhood and his school years in Vernon.
In the 1960's, he moved to Vancouver and obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia. He graduated with a Masters of Social Work from UBC in 1968.
On August 5, 1967 he married Marjorie Tedder and they were just shy of celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary together. Peter and Marjorie had two magnificent, strong and exceptionally bright boys named David and Michael.
After obtaining his formal education, he embarked on a long career in the field of social work. He worked for the BC Ministry of Social Services for many years in Quesnel, Prince George, Campbell River, Kamloops, Victoria, then finally back to Vernon, where he retired in 1998.
Following retirement, Peter enjoyed travelling and visited Ukraine, France, China, Chile, Peru and Russia. He and Marjorie did a Scandinavian cruise, cycling trips in Ireland and the UK as well as the Oregon coast. They visited many US destinations, in addition to traveling across Canada and back!
Peter loved meeting people, making friends and cared deeply for his family. Peter loved reading, walking, playing the accordion, cooking, watching hockey, and tending his vegetable garden (except the weeding).
He is survived by Marjorie, Dave (Sue), and Mike (Deb), grandchildren Matthew, Lauren, and Lily, as well as many friends and extended family.
