PHYLLIS JEAN NIXON
Phyl Nixon passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in Vernon Jubilee Hospital on the evening of November 27, 2013. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Paul (Dar), and her daughter, Liz, her grandchildren Elise (Glenn) and great granddaughter, Sadie, Braden (Kristy), Taylor (Kim) and Jordan (Chelsea). She will also be lovingly remembered by her long time friend and caregiver, Fern, and her live-in companion and caregiver, Faith, her brother, Gib (Gerry), special nephew, Dave, and many other good friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, and four of her five siblings. Phyl was born in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, the youngest of 6 children. Her mom passed away when Phyl was only 6, and when she was 12 she, along with her dad and brother, moved to New Westminster, Phyl became a teacher and began her career in Arrowhead, BC where she met Bill. They married and eventually moved to Vernon in 1950, with both Paul and Liz in tow. Phyl taught for several years in the Vernon School District before retiring in 1979. Throughout her adult life, Phyl was an avid and accomplished knitter, crossword puzzle solver extraordinaire, and excellent no fuss cook, and an amazingly fast reader, but Phyl’s main passion in life for the past 65 years was her family. She cooked Sunday dinner at the family home pretty well every Sunday since Paul and Liz and spouses moved back to Vernon in 1974; she attended all her grandchildren’s school events, music recitals, sports activities, weddings, etc.; she begged to babysit her grandchildren, often all four at the same time, and was thrilled with the arrival of her great granddaughter last March. Phyl will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pleasant Valley Chapel on Wednesday, December 4 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250-542-0155.
