Polly Paraska Danal
was born on Ukrainian New Years Day, January 14th, 1914 at Springside, Saskatchewan. The family was celebrating New Years Day and her mother Magda felt her time of delivery was at hand, so quickly slipped out of the home and went to the stable where the cattle were. There was a rock there as well and Polly always said that she was born on a rock, nestled in hay.
She is survived by her most precious family; her daughter, Jeanette (Joseph) Goldenthal; three grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Dennis) Wakelin, Jeffrey (Andrea) Goldenthal and Jon (Danielle) Goldenthal; five great-grandchildren, Stephanie Goldenthal, Joni Goldenthal, Andrew Goldenthal, Rachel Wakelin and Sarah Wakelin; and many nieces and nephews. Polly was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill; her parents, Yurko and Magda Popowich; her brothers, Michael, Nicolas, John and Daniel; and her sister, Annie.
Polly’s parents immigrated from Austria to Saskatchewan in 1909, then came to Spallumcheen and Armstrong in 1923 where Polly entered Grade 3 at the age of nine years. She had many fond memories of her teachers and principal. Her first job at the age of sixteen was at the “old” Armstrong Hospital where she helped with the cleaning in the kitchen, laundry and other rooms. She also cleaned the Baptist Church and gave her small salary back to the church as her offering. Polly met the love of her life Bill while a part of the Baptist Youth Group. He eventually became her husband and they were married for 60 years when he passed away in 1997. Polly had many interests in life and was a member of the Armstrong First Baptist Church, Okanagan Historical Society, the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Museum Society, Allan Brooks Society, Library Aid at A.E.S. with Vicki Green, Sunnybrae Bible Camp and the Armstrong Horticultural Society. She was always very appreciative for what people did for her. Bill and Polly were one of the original “home renovators” having done nine renovations and three new homes during their working years.
Polly left us peacefully on Sunday morning, July 15th, 2012 at Polson North Extended Care Unit with her family of caregivers at her side. She has gone to be with her Lord and Saviour and be reunited with her beloved husband Bill and other family members who went before her.
A private Graveside Service at the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Cemetery will precede a Celebration Of Polly’s Life which will take place at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Monday, July 23rd, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Bruce Mateika officiating. A Reception will follow in the Bethel Tea Room.
As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Polly to the Sunnybrae Bible Camp, 3915 Sunnybrae Canoe Pt. Road, Tappen, B.C. V0E 2X1.
