Farewell to Ralph Steven Makarenko, who passed away at the age of 69 years.
Ralph was born in Vancouver BC, to Steven Ralph Makarenko and Coral Fern Makarenko (deceased). He is survived by his Father Steven Makarenko and siblings, David Makarenko, Judith Makarenko, Jeannette Sara Makarenko, Cheryl Muth, Cynthia Makarenko and James Makarenko.
Though born with Downs Syndrome, Ralph never let it slow him down. He was an avid sports fan. When not watching his favourite teams, he would be bowling, shooting hoops, playing horseshoes, or throwing darts. When anyone participated with him, he would always win, he was so good. He loved to swim, play his music and watch Red Skelton. When he caught a fish, the bragging never ended. He never let us forget he was the oldest and always in charge.
Ralph demonstrated to all, that "Downs Syndrome" was really "Ups Syndrome". He was not "special needs", but a "special person", who gave us all the ability to accept, understand and love people who are perceived as different.
We wish to offer a heartfelt thank you and sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff at Lamton House in Coldstream BC, who so gently and kindly took care of Ralph during his last years.
He will be missed. We are grateful to have had him in our lives.
A memorial service and burial arrangements are being planned to be held this summer.
