RETA (CARSWELL) NEE: JOHNSTON DENHOLM

DENHOLM, RETA (CARSWELL)

NEE: JOHNSTON

passed away peacefully on August 1, 2005, at 90 years of age, in Noric House. Reta was predeceased by her first husband, Ron Carswell, in 1953 and her second husband, George Denholm, in 1986. Surviving are three children – Ron Carswell (Helen Scott) of Calgary, Ann Lord of Vernon and Kent Carswell (Kathy) of Fredericton, N.B. She is further survived by five grandchildren – Dana Carswell (Howard Hisdal) of Kelowna, Mary (Bill Smith) of Calgary, Peter (Lucie) Carswell of Florenceville, N.B., Ron (Danielle) Carswell of Crofton, B.C. and Reta Carswell of Fredericton, N.B. Reta is further blessed to have surviving nine great grandchildren and extended family members plus friends. Reta was born on December 2, 1914 of a pioneer family in Salmon Arm, B.C. In 1935 she married Ron Carswell and lived in Kamloops then Vernon. She was best remembered by the population of Vernon for her long-time employment at The Bay. Reta was a charter member of the Pythian Sisters and a member of the All Saints Anglican Church Altar Guild. Reta and Kent moved to Vancouver in 1958 where Reta opened a boarding house for University Students from the Okanagan. Reta married again in 1964 to George Denholm and enjoyed a varied work and social life. To us, she was the ultimate mother whose compassion, understanding and sense of humour were always an inspiration for us. Mom always encouraged us to do the best we could, to respect others and give with kindness and humility. We are going to miss her terribly but know she was ready to meet up with the rest of the family who had gone on before.

We gratefully acknowledge all the staff at Noric House for their care and commitment to Mom, to Dr. Arnold for his understanding and compassion, to the Vernon Funeral Home for their dedication and professionalism in the preparation of Mom and to Reverend Davison for his help to us before the service and for giving us the opportunity to say our goodbyes and God Speed.

Donations may be made, in Reta’s name, to the Noric House Activities Centre for furthering of their services to their clients 1400 Mission Rd. Vernon, B.C. V1T 9C3. Arrangements in the hands of Vernon Funeral Home.
