RHODA MAY HOWLETT
August 8, 1921 – September 17, 2008
Rhoda May Howlett of Heron Grove Care Centre peacefully left us on Wednesday, September 17th, 2008. She lived 87 summers and passed from complications of a lifelong blood disorder.
Born in Clairmont, Alberta, Rhoda attended secretarial school and later married Elwin Howlett in Edmonton. Elwin & Rhoda moved to Vernon in 1961.
As a teen, Rhoda was athletic and enjoyed many sports. As a wife and mum, she excelled in all homemaking activities. Rhoda loved travelling and flying with her family in the family aircraft and was adept at navigating and interpreting aviation maps. Of quick wit and tongue, she was a people person, loved to read and kept up to date on current events. Rhoda enjoyed working for many years at The Bay’s Malt Stop, and at Town and Country Dress Shop in the Village Green Mall. She volunteered for 18 years at The Schubert Centre.
At age 16, Rhoda listened to two homeless ministers tell the Gospel story and her heart was moved to follow God. She met faithfully for 71 years in various homes where a Sunday Morning Fellowship Meeting was held. Her deepest joy was for God, the Meetings, God’s Servants and her Friends. She will be missed by many friends.
She will be lovingly remembered and hugely missed by her husband of 59 years, Elwin Howlett and her two children: Gina (Jeff) Jorna of Vernon, and Perry (Sandy) Howlett of Kelowna; her sister Barbara (Bud) Niehenke of Spokane, WA; her brother Dale (Carol) Scott of Vancouver, WA; many nieces and nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her father Guy Stuart Scott; her mother Eileen Belle Scott, her sister Wilma (Les) Burrows of Grande Prairie, AB; her sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Benny Saine of Ellijay, GA.
Her family will hold a memorial service on Thursday, September 25th, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Paddlewheel Park Hall, 7801 Okanagan Landing Road, Vernon. Mr. Gordon Winkler officiating.
A tea reception will follow.
