December 6, 1925 - December 4, 2021
We are sad to announce the passing of Robert Austin Bricker on 04 Dec 2021, two days short of his 96th birthday. He is survived by daughter, Barbara Pittman, son, Robert (Sheri), and their mother, Linda, 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 2 nieces.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Marie Weeks, and a brother, Jack.
Robert was born in Detroit, Michigan on 06 December 1925. His passion was music from a very early age. After graduation he joined the army, was an MP and played in the Army Band.
After his discharge he earned his Master's degree in Music & Philosophy at the University of Michigan. Two credits short of earning his Ph.D he took a job as Assistant Professor at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, where he taught courses in music and philosophy and directed the band. There he met and married his wife, Linda. They both played in the Lexington Symphony before moving to Richmond, Virginia, in 1960 to play in the Richmond Symphony.
He went on to play 1st trombone in the Baltimore Symphony. In 1967 the family moved to Vancouver, BC to teach music at the University of B.C. He played 1st trombone in the Vancouver Symphony, taught at Vancouver Community Music School and Douglas College and played in the big band at the Cave Nightclub.
Later he taught at Selkirk College in Castlegar and was Chairman of the Music Department at Okanagan College in Vernon. He and Linda both spent many years playing in the Okanagan Symphony before he returned to Vancouver to teach at St George's School and the Vancouver Academy of Music.
In retirement, he enjoyed reading, collecting and listening to classical music. He especially loved playing golf, drinking good wine, riding his bike and driving his sporty cars. Robert was a great talker and storyteller with a great sense of humour, and he left us with many great memories.
Many thanks to Dr Chris Cunningham and the Care Team at Gateby.
