Robert (Bob) Joseph Ortman passed away peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital with his family at his side on Sat., Aug. 27, 2005 at the age of 79 years. He had fought a courageous battle against cancer. Bob was born on July 20, 1926 on the family farm at Francis, Sask., the eighth of 11 children. He lived in the Francis/Weyburn area for most of his younger life. For many years he farmed and worked as a mechanic for a farm machinery dealership. In October of 1966 Bob moved his family to Vernon, BC where he worked as a heavy duty mechanic for Bloom and Sigalet, retiring in December of 1994 after 28 years with the company. The Ortmans moved to Armstrong in June of 1974 to their farm in Spallumcheen where Bob resided until his death. Bob belonged to the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Armstrong, and was a former member of the Hunter’s Range Snowmobile Club (1977-1987). Bob is survived by his wife of almost 53 years (married Oct.28, 1952), Lydia of Armstrong and two daughters, Janet (Ed) Anderson of Armstrong and Joanne (Kevin) Balardo of Vernon, as well as his four grandchildren Karla and Janelle Balardo of Vernon and Tyler and Stefani Anderson of Armstrong. He is further survived by two brothers, three sisters, two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, may nieces and nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by parents, three brothers and two sisters. Prayers were recited Tues., Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Armstrong. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wed., Aug. 31 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Father Leo Boyd, OMI celebrant. Interment was in Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery. Pallbearers were his nephews: Rod, Daryl, Grant and Glenn Kalin of Armstrong, Les Hala of Bow Island, AB, and Robert Whieldon of Maple Ridge, BC.
