LADAN, Robert

February 19, 1953 ~ March 25, 2014

It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Robert Ladan at his home on March 25, 2014. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife Lorraine, daughter Lorena (Andrew) Klingel; grandchildren Kate (19 months old), Ally (3) and Ella (6); father Wim (Willem), sisters Esther, Ingrid and Astrid and brother Eric, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rose and Lawrence Gutziet. He was predeceased by mother Jo (Jaapje).

Rob was born in The Hague, Holland and arrived with his family in Canada when he was 4 years old. The family lived in Quebec and enjoyed summers at “the cottage” on Lac Simon where Rob found his passion for sailing. In his youth he went west for adventure and fell in love with BC and settled for a time in Revelstoke. He became a ski bum, ski instructor and later a patroller. This is where he met Lorraine and they quickly became life partners, soul mates and developed a solid, loving relationship, which grew at each passing year. Rob shared a very special bond with his daughter Lorena. He was adored by her and was her biggest influence in every aspect of her life.

After spending many weekends visiting the Okanagan to enjoy the fine weather, they moved to Vernon where they married at the Vernon Court House. Rob picked up his enjoyment of sailing owning a series of boats and being a member first at NOSA (North Okanagan Sailing Association) and later at the Vernon Yacht Club where he was an active member, Commodore for 2 terms, worked on a number of events and was part of the racing fleet. He enjoyed racing, long sails on his boat and all the sailing talk and discussions that everyone who sails is very familiar with.

The family moved to Ottawa for 10 years for career opportunities and to be near Rob’s parents but missed the Okanagan dearly and moved back, with his parents also settling here in more recent years. Rob was a hard mountain biker for years and recently enjoyed cross-country skiing at Sovereign Lake. He worked hard and played hard. Rob’s love for life and for everyone he met was infectious. He was generous to a fault and an example of how caring we all can be. All of those whose lives he touched are better people for having known him.

It is not surprising that most of Rob’s career involved selling playground and parks equipment. He had so much time and energy for children, especially his nieces, nephews and 3 young granddaughters who gave him a new found love of life and enjoyment. After the birth of his first granddaughter, Ella, he found a new passion – being a wonderful grandparent. This quickly became the focus of his life and he excelled at it.

“When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure”- unknown. We miss you so much Rob. No words can describe.
