ROBERT JOSEPH passed away at home on Thursday, January 2, 2003 at age 82. He is survived by his dear wife Bergetta (Schleppe) and their five children: Sheila (Michael) O’Brien, Joseph (Daneen) Mercer, Marie (Kurt) Ulmer, Michael (Judith) Mercer, and Theresa (Gordie) Frie; 22 grandchildren; and his two sisters, Mary (John) Charbonneau and Monica “Mickey” Bazan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by 4 siblings: Josephine Mercer, Ursula Charbonneau, Sylvia Komm, and John “Toz” Mercer. Rob was born at Gilbert, Alberta on February 15, 1920, son of Joseph and Ethel Mercer. The family moved to Vancouver and later to Mission. As a 10 year old, he came with his family to the Okanagan, settling at Bear Creek. At an early age, he joined the B.C. Dragoons. When WWII broke out, he enlisted for active duty and served in the European campaign with The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own). Upon his return to Canada, he began his lengthy policing career with the B.C. Provincial Police and the RCMP. He retired to a small orchard in Oyama where is spent the next 25 years. While there he accepted an appointment as Marriage Commissioner. He tool great pleasure officiating at over 1400 marriages, including ones on horseback, in a hot air balloon, standing in waste-deep water, and on at least one mountain top. When he could no longer go out to marry, couples came to him. He married his last couple 6 days before his death. Rob told great stories, enjoyed the outdoors, entertained many associates, and had a great love for family. His last months brought a deepened faith and trust in the mercy of God. He found peace in the rosary, and prayed it into his last hour. The family wishes to thank Dr. Cheyne and the Palliative Care team for their support and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o 839 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC V1Y 5X4, or the Cancer Center for the Southern Interior, 399 Royal Ave., Kelowna BC V1Y 5L3.
