ROBERTA DOLORES (nee HOUSTON) GILLESPIE after a life of love, friendship, and adventure passed away peacefully in her sleep, at Anjou House in Vernon on October 5, 2004, aged 89. Born in Somerville, Texas on March 2, 1915, Dolores was the second youngest of seven children. After graduation from school in 1933, she travelled to China to visit family, and it was during this visit that she met and later married Sholto Gillespie from Victoria, B.C. Following the outbreak of WWII, the family, that by then included two children, relocated to the Okanagan where Dolores had resided ever since. The Gillespies moved to Vernon in 1949 where Dolores became a supportive member of Trinity United Church and remained so for more than fifty years. She was also an active volunteer in the community and only recently had to curtail her commitments due to declining health. Dolores was predeceased by her beloved husband, Sholto (“G”), in 1966 and her only son, Robert (Mort) in 1991, as well as her parents, three brothers, and two sisters in Texas. Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Murray Thom, Lake Country; Mary and Dale Winskowski, Vernon; and her brother William Houston, Brenham, Texas. She will be missed by daughters-in-law Diane Gillespie and Angie Gillespie. “Nunnie” will also be fondly remembered by grandchildren Hamish (Maureen), Stuart, and Ian (Jennifer) Thom, Sheilagh (Matt) Wubs, Tanya (Jess) Parsonage, Robyn (Mike) Winskowski, and Christine Gillespie.
