Ruby Margarette Lawrence
Peacefully on August 12, age 96, in Vernon, BC. Wife of the late John (Jack) Lawrence 1910-1992. Dear mother of Maureen, Sandra (John Stuart), Janet (Clint Ellison) and Brock. Loving grandmother of Lyrica Lawrence, David Ellison and Merida Zeindler. Predeceased by her siblings Melvin, Inger, Olga, Norma, Ellen, Harold and Arlene. Dearly loved by her sister Agnes and her brother Conrad (Rita), and many nieces and nephews.
Ruby was born on a farm near Dunblane, Saskatchewan, third child of Mathias and Synneva Kaardal Romuld who had immigrated from Norway. Ruby married Jack Lawrence, a dentist, in Ottawa in 1939, and enjoyed many community activities in Ottawa, Brampton and Scarborough until Jack’s retirement in 1975. Ruby recalled the childhood delights of tasting Okanagan cherries on a hot prairie day and was thrilled to move to Vernon in 1975. She enjoyed playing duplicate bridge for many years in Ontario and for 35 years at the Vernon Bridge Club where she made many friends. She fondly remembered square dancing in Brampton, walking on the Scarborough bluffs, and safari trips to East Africa.
Ruby’s children feel very fortunate to have had their beautiful mother for this long. She was a lovely cook and grew her own herbs, vegetables and fruits. Her local fruit pies were scrumptious. Ruby designed and made clothes for herself and her children as well as making the usual costumes for figure skating carnivals and Halloween. Despite her busy life, she read extensively, learning much from the CBC who she said educated her all through her life. She passed a love of painting, cooking, sewing and literature to her children and grandchildren for which they are grateful. They chuckle fondly at the jive dance lessons she gave them back in the early 60’s. She will be greatly missed by them. No service by request. Donations if desired, donor’s choice.
