Born in Margo, Saskatchewan in 1919, the second of four children, Daniel, (predeceased in 2008) Henriette and Maurice. They grew up in Kuroki, Sask and worked in the family owned general store.
The family moved to BC in 1945, where Sam worked on the family orchard in East Kelowna. He fell in love and married Agnes Hansen in Kelowna in 1945 and eventually settled in Vernon where Sam was employed as a cabinet maker and carpenter. They had one daughter, Priscilla (Vernon, BC).
Sam nursed Agnes through a lengthy illness and after 45 years of marriage, she passed away.
Sam adored his 4 grandchildren, Bradley, Nadine, Scott and Tyler, and spent many hours watching and entertaining them as children. Each recalls their own special memories with Grandpa, be it building in the
sand box or in his shop, the famous ‘whisker rubs’ and many challenging games of Crib. He was sadly predeceased by his oldest grandchild Bradley in 1973. Sam was also proud Great Grandpa to one great grandchild who carries his name, Samuel Riley Sookarow of Dallas Texas.
In 1990, Sam embarked on a new chapter in his life and married his lifelong friend, Linda Brown. He welcomed Linda’s children, (Barry, Bonnie and Bernie Brown), numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his stepson Bernie in 2008. Sam and Linda moved to Nanaimo 10 years ago and despite many health challenges, they cared tremendously for each other and always enjoyed life. Many will remember them affectionately holding hands in the hallways of Nanaimo Seniors Home where they resided.
Sam’s life was centered around his deep worship of Jehovah. He gave of himself and his time freely to many both in and out of the congregation. He touched many people throughout his 91 years and will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, Sam would have appreciated donations to the Watchtower Bible Society c/o Box 831 Vernon, B.C. V1T 6M8. Service will be held August 29th at 3 PM at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 6011 Dumont Road in Nanaimo.
