Sophie Frick (nee Wornardt) was called Home to be with her Lord and reunited with her husband Alex on July 2nd, 2016 at the age of 92 years. She was so blessed to have been able to have her family at her side throughout her final days at Gateby Care Centre, her home for the last two years.

Sophie was born in Poland on April 29th, 1924 and was the oldest of seven children born to Julius and Emma Wornardt. The family immigrated to Canada when Sophie was five years of age and she learned English from the neighbourhood children. She began working at the age of fifteen, first at the Vernon Packing House for BC Shippers, and then as a waitress at the Union Café. It was here that she met her future husband Alex, who was a soldier stationed during World War II at the Vernon Army Camp. They dated for just over six months, then were married on June 27th, 1943. Their marriage would remain loving and strong for 62 years until Alex passed away in 2005.

Sophie will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Geri (Lyle) Poulton, Georgie (Dugald) McLean, Karen (Art) Beck, Lynn Irmen and Diane (Jake) Block, all of Vernon, B.C.; eighteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-grandbaby due in August; three sisters, Irene Schneider and Esther Hanet, both of Vernon, B.C. and Margaret Brandenburg of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law, Glenda Wornardt of Vernon, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Armin Wornardt and Benjamin Wornardt; and one sister, Ella Wornardt.

Sophie loved her garden, crocheting, knitting and making quilts and afghans. She was a part of a bowling team for many years, would love to play cards with friends and enjoyed camping with Dad in their motor-home. Sophie was also a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society. She had a wonderful sense of humour, a beautiful smile, an amazing inner strength and will, and was loved by all who knew her. Our lives will not be the same without her.

A private family Graveside Service at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery will precede the Memorial Service which will be held in the Chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5151 Alain Road, on Thursday, July 7th, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Craig Tufts officiating.

As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Sophie to the B.C. Heart & Stroke Foundation, #4 - 1551 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 9M9

The family wishes to thank the caring, compassionate staff at Gateby who cared for Sophie, especially those who were with her in her final days. The care, concern and love you showed her and our family during those difficult days were what helped us get through them as well as we did. Our thanks is also extended to Dr. Peter Henley for his devotion in caring for Sophie.
