June 19, 1916 - May 18, 2017

Sophie passed away peacefully on May 18, 2017 one month before her 101st birthday. She was the last surviving family member of her generation, 16 brothers and sisters, born to parents Wasyl and Anastasia Hrehirchek, in the small community of Chipman, AB. As a young woman, she visited her sister Nancy’s farm in Evansburg, AB and met the love of her life, Paul (2000), to whom she was married to for 56 years.

Family and friends were very fortunate to celebrate Sophie’s 100th birthday last June (2016) at Polson Care Center. Family came from Edmonton, Calgary, Fort St. John, Grand Prairie, Surrey, White Rock, Kelowna, and Vernon to celebrate this wonderful event. Even the Queen sent her congratulations.

As in all celebrations, there was wonderful food.

Very fitting as Sophie was a fabulous gardener, cook, and baker. She loved visiting with family and

friends and you always knew that the coffee pot would be on and a wonderful treat: cake, pie, doughnuts or even scrumptious cinnamon buns would be served to the guests.

Sophie will be greatly missed by her immediate family: her children — Larry (Lorna), Ken, Pat (Carsten), Paulette (Mike), and Brian (Bev), her grandchildren — Kevin, Kristelle (Joey), Duane (Renata), Kendra (Omar), Daniel, Zane (Paige) and Josh (Michelle), and her great-grandchildren — Katelynn, Tanner, Karim, Hakeem, Mischa and Jean.

Many, many relatives and friends will have good memories of time spent with Sophie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity United Church on August 5, 2017 for close family and friends, followed by a reception at the home of Larry and Lorna. Details of exact time to follow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vernon Funeral Home, Phone: 250 542 0155. Condolences may be offered at
