October 7, 1932 - July 15, 2020
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Stella Howald on July 15, 2020 in Vernon, BC at the age of 87.
Stella was born in Wanham, Alberta to Nels and Eva Lee and was one of three siblings. The family moved to Kelowna in the late 1940's. Stella worked in the fishing camps, fruit packing plants, and orchards where she had a reputation as an exceptional grafter. She claimed that one of the orchardists was so impressed with her work that he was going to name the tree after her. Thus the "Stella" cherry was born.
Stella travelled to England in the early 1950's where she worked as a nanny. After returning home to Canada she married Norman Howald in 1964. They settled in Calgary before relocating to the Okanagan Valley, and eventually settling in Lumby, B.C. Stella moved to Vernon in 1976 where she continued nanny work and enjoying the great outdoors. Stella loved nature, animals, and had a fierce, independent spirit. There truly was no one like Stella.
She was predeceased by sisters Anne and Dorothy, one son, and estranged husband Norman. Left to mourn are children Calvin Howald and Cyndi Howald.
The family would like to thank the staff at Noric House for their care during the almost 8 years that Stella resided there. Interment to take place in Kelowna, B.C. and a private gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local S.P.C.A., or the Noric House residents' comfort fund.
