GREY, STEWART GEORGE
GEORGE passed away peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong, B.C. on February 16, 2005 at the age of 82. George was born to Steward George (Pop) Grey and Lillian Beatrice Grey in Grand Forks B.C. on November 24, 1922. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jonina (Nina) of 51 years, and his three sisters, Olive Grey, Dorothy Henderson and Georgina (Zane) Davidson. George is survived by his brothers, Bob (Eleanor) and Frank (Bud) Grey. He will also be lovingly remembered by his children, Jim (Jane) Grey of Grand Forks, Hardy (Karen) Grey of Kamloops and Linda (Pat) Grey of Armstrong, his 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
George grew up in Grand Forks and started out working full time as a grocery store clerk when he was 13 years old. George and Nina were married in 1942 before he joined the army and fought in the Second World War. He was discharged due to shrapnel injuries. He worked at many jobs including: working in a butcher shop, delivering coal, driving school bus, falling trees in the bush and bookkeeping after graduating from Trail business college. He was then hired on at the Grand Forks sawmill as a superintendent where he looked after both shifts. During his years in Grand Forks, he and his brother owned Grey’s Sport Shop. He tried his hand at mining for a while before getting a job for Crown Zellerback in Armstrong where he retired.
George was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed playing softball, curling and golf. He belonged to the Legion and was a member of the Oddfellows. He and Nina spent many winters as snowbirds in Blythe, California. Playing cards was his favorite pastime. He was known for his great sense of humor and his phenomenal math skills. His greatest joy in life was his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. In accordance with his wishes, there will not be a formal funeral service. However, the family is inviting relatives, friends and acquaintances to an open house at the home of Linda and Pat at 2290 Patterson Ave., Armstrong, B.C. It will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2005 between 2:00 and 6:00 PM. Messages of condolences may be emailed to the family at email@example.com.
