Syd Baker

Syd Baker passed away in Vernon on September 18th , 2008 with his loving

family by his side. He was born at Riverside, Manitoba on November

24th, 1917 and grew up in the Brandon Hills area. The family moved to

B.C. in 1960 when they purchased a home in Vernon and a farm on Back

Enderby Road near Armstrong. Syd was a Zone Manager with International

Harvester for many years and at one point was transferred to Vancouver.

He preferred the rural lifestyle and soon returned to the Okanagan. He

worked with Seymour Equipment, Shillam Ford, and managed the Vernon

offi ce of the Canada Farm Labour Pool, retiring at age 70. He was very active

in the community and was involved with the Vernon Pigeon & Poultry

Club, Armstrong Enderby Riding Club, and was a Vernon Winter Carnival

Cop for many years. Also, because of his love for children, Syd was Santa

at the Mall for several years. Syd will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered

by his family, wife Bernece, nine sons and daughters; Craig

Baker (Doris) Kelowna, Jim Baker (Carol) , Calgary, Marvin Baker (Gloria),

Kelowna, Synece Baker–Graves, Armstrong, Nyoni Puhlmann (Herb),

Armstrong, Judy Baker–Wood, Vernon, Susan Koersen (John), Armstrong,

Cyndrena Baker (John), Armstrong, Brad Baker (Lori), Vernon. There are

19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, extended family and many

friends. Grampa’s last words to his family were ‘Tell everyone I love them’.

A celebration of Syd’s life will be held on Saturday, September 27th, 2008

at 11:00 AM at the Mountain View Chapel, 2980 Smith Drive, Armstrong,

BC. Kelly Grittner offi ciating. Cremation. In memory of Syd, those wishing

may make donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Vernon

Multiple Sclerosis Society. Arrangements in the care of Personal Alternative
