July 30, 2022
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Jack, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He passed away peacefully at Vernon Hospice House on July 30, 2022, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was 88 years old...and a bit.
Jack was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Sherrie nee Helmer Roberts, his parents, Florence and Thomas and sister Cecily Jill Ryan McCluskey.
Dad was born in Whitelaw, Alberta in 1934 to Florence nee Ware and Thomas Humphreys.
Jack's family moved to Vernon in 1941 where Dad made friends for life.
He met the love of his life, Sherrie, at the Vernon Curling Rink(though we are told that his big sister Jill, introduced them).
They married in 1957 and settled in the Coldstream in 1959.
The Kalamalka Country Club is where the family loved to spend their summers.
In 1967, Jack and Sherrie started a new venture, Chinchilla Ranching, and in 1979, they built their dream property, the Blue Vale Ranch, in Spallumcheen.
Through chinchillas, they met people from all over the world and their animals won many shows, including 2 Canadian National Show Champions. Dad used to judge at shows all over North America.
Dad was truly a Jack-of-all-Trades and dabbled in everything. The habits he learned as a Boy Scout simply stayed with him for life.
He played and watched all sports especially, curling and tennis.
His working career was spent at Wayside Press where he started as a teenager shovelling coal and retired 43 years later as their Bindery Foremen.
He was an avid reader and a Past Worshipful Master of the Kalamalka Masonic Lodge.
In 2018, Dad sold the farm and started a new chapter in his life by moving to Canterbury Court.
As usual, he embraced his new Community of Canterbury and wanted to be at the heart and soul of how it functioned.
He made many friends with both residents and staff, including his special friend Audrey.
The family would like to acknowledge Jack's elementary school friends of 80 years, Blake Nolan(2021), Ron Carswell and Dave Harrison(2016). Also, Nolan's Pharmacy, Dr Hardy and his team, Kimberlee Care and all Canterbury Staff.
Simply put, Dad was a class act.
Jack is survived by 3 daughters, Crystal (Tim), Marney (Darl), Gwenna (Clifford), sister-in-law, Fran (Allan); 3 grandchildren: Dustin(Amanda), Ariel(Lorenzo) and Brodie(Bree) and great granddaughters Jaida and Kira.
