Thomas Alfred Nordstrom
October 1, 1936 – March 4, 2013
Tom left us in the early hours of March 4 at North Okanagan Hospice House with his family by his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Karel, son Cameron, daughter Julianne, grandson Dawson (the apple of his eye) and brother David (Jean) as well as many nieces and nephews and long time friends. He was predeceased by his father, Bill, his mother, Margaret, and his brother, Eric.
Tom was born in Armstrong and spent his childhood at a farm on Pleasant Valley Crossroad. He went to UBC and graduated in Electrical Engineering with the Association of Professional Engineers Gold Medal and an Athlone Fellowship to England.
Karel and Tom were married in England and spent the next 3 years there.
Upon his return to Canada, he went to work for BC Hydro where he spent the next 30 years. During those years, he became very involved with Lions Clubs International.
Tom retired to the Okanagan in 1991 where he and Karel purchased a farm and opened a Bed and Breakfast. He became involved with the local Lions Club and their projects, dedicating many years to the development of the Lions Vision Centre and the Haugen Community Healthcare Society. Tom was honoured by his community being named Citizen of the Year in 2001 and recently was recognized by the City of Armstrong for his outstanding contribution to Volunteerism in the North Okanagan.
A celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at the ABC Chapel on Rosedale Avenue in Armstrong on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may send donations in memory of Tom to: Haugen Community Healthcare Society (PO Box 495, Armstrong, BC V0E 1B1) or North Okanagan Hospice (3506 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, BC V1T 1S4).
