Velma (Val) Rita Larsen
The family of Val Larsen is sad to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother on July 24, 2013 at the age of 81 years. She is survived by Ivan, her husband of 59 years, and her daughter Karen, son Jeff (Christine) and daughter Kristine (Brian), grandchildren Lauranne (Craig), Kelsey, Shelby, Spencer, Ross, great-grandchildren Ashley and Evan, and many extended family and friends.
Val was born in Toronto and was the youngest of 3 children of James and Dorothy Clarke. She met Ivan in Rivers, Manitoba while both were in the RCAF. After they married, they spent 3 years in Germany with two small children. On returning to Canada, their third child was born and the family then lived in Manitoba and Alberta before Val and Ivan retired to Vernon in 1979.
Val cherished her family and was always a welcoming hostess at their house on Okanagan Lake. She was an avid gardener, a skilled seamstress and knitter; she enjoyed both crossword puzzles and long rides in their boat, the Miss Val; and she especially loved to dance. Val also loved to travel, and she and Ivan enjoyed camping in Europe and throughout Western Canada, and cruising to several tropical locales.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Noric House for their caring support of Velma throughout her residence there and during her final days.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in the chapel of the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home on Monday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, the Cancer Society or the Diabetes Association. Arrangements are in the care of the Vernon Funeral Home (250-542-0155).
