Vera Newlove

(April 1st, 1925 – August 22nd, 2009)

We announce the passing of Vera Newlove at Heron Grove on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009. She was born Vera May in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Vera worked as a Civil Servant and later moved to Australia and Canada, finally settling in Vernon with her late husband, Donald.

Vera was a character and a real flirt with an outrageous sense of humor. Fiercely independent, Vera was most reluctant to accept care from others. She suffered brain damage which often affected her ability to control her inside voice.

Vera is survived by two sisters, Lillian Livingston and Margaret Hart, both of England; several nieces and nephews; her brothers-in-law, Harry Newlove and John Newlove; Don’s children, Christopher, Karen and Darlene; extended family members and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 1997.

Cremation preceded the Funeral Service which will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Thursday, August 27th, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Roy White officiating. Placement of Vera’s cremated remains will follow in the Bethel Rose Garden Of Remembrance. Friends are then invited to a Reception in the Bethel Tea Room.

As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Vera to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 5151 Alain Road, Vernon, B.C. V1B 3K6 or the North Okanagan Therapeutic Riding Association, P.O. Box 328, Vernon, B.C. V1T 6M3.

Thanks to faithful friends from St. John’s Lutheran Church who have been a source of care and comfort as Vera’s faith community. Thank you to the staff at Heron Grove for your support. Over many years there have been people from government agencies, community nursing teams and businesses advocating for Vera and wanting to make life better for her. Their best efforts were very often frustrated or declined as Vera continually chose to do life her way! We have all learned many lessons during the years of participating in Vera’s life.

Funeral arrangements have been made with BETHEL FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD., 5605-27th Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 8Z5, 250-542-1187
