On Saturday, December 28, 2002, Verica Helen Deerward, formerly of Balfour, BC, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Noric House. She was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on April 8, 1913 and was 89 years. She was predeceased by her husband Philip and by her younger brother Ian Sinclair. Verica will be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Irene Sinclair of Abbotsford, nieces Bonnie Jean Folley and Sharon L. Bruckshaw, many dear friends and former students. She moved to Vernon in 2000 from Balfour (near Nelson). Verica lived an active life dedicating herself to her love of music and animals. During the school hours, she was an educator of Special Needs Children. Following school hours, she taught Violin and Piano to children and adults. She had her Music Diploma A.T.C.M., and was a member of BC Registered Music Teachers Association. During her busy day, she also made time to play the Violin and Viola with the Selkirk Chamber Orchestra in the David Thompson University Centre Orchestra. Her love of animals drew her to the S.P.C.A. as a volunteer and she was a Past President of the Nelson association. Verica loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker. She was a tenacious, active woman with a very giving heart and generous nature. Those wishing to make memorial donations in memory of Verica may do so their local SPCA. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday January 4, 2003 from the Chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in Nelson Cemetery at a later date.
