On March 3, 2010 Verna Alice Nelson (nee Rice), formerly of Vernon, BC passed away at the age of 95 at Kinsmen Place Lodge in Surrey, BC, where she had resided for the last six years.
Verna was born in Vernon, BC on July 14, 1914. She married Robert Peel (Bob) Nelson in 1939, after meeting at Camp Hurlbert. They had been together for sixty three years when Bob passed away in 2002.
Verna was a homemaker and worked part time for 35 years in the men’s department at the Vernon Hudson’s Bay Co. store. She was an active member of the Pythian Sisters and the United Church for many years and volunteered a great deal in the Vernon community caring for the elderly. Verna travelled extensively all over the world. She was an avid golfer, walker, square dancer, sewer and gardener.
Verna is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law; Charles (Marlene) (Surrey, BC), Wayne (Alora) (Camrose, AB) and Dennis (Patti) (North Delta, BC), six grandchildren; Jennifer (Jason Willes), Chris (Sayaka), Matt, Joel (Tina), Scott and Michelle, and four great grandchildren; Olivia, Jaxson, Vienna and Brady, many nieces, nephews and their children. Verna was predeceased by her seven siblings; Grace Saunders, Len Rice, Harry Rice, Mary Thorlakson, Elwood Rice, Annie Anderson and her twin sister, Vera Clippingdale.
The memorial service will be held at Fraser Heights Funeral Home, 14835 Fraser Highway, Surrey BC, Saturday, March 6, at 10:00 am.
