Walter George Watson

Walter George Watson

Walter Watson, age 96, died at Polson West Extended Care on December 17, 2008.

Walter was born on October 23, 1912 in Ewing, AB to the late Henry and Alma (Evans) Watson. He was raised on a farm in Big Valley, AB. On August 28, 1936 he was united in marriage to Ethel Hanson. They moved to Vancouver in 1942, where Walter worked as a welder in the shipyards, moonlighting as a beachcomber on week-ends.

In 1948, Walter and Ethel moved to Vernon, where Walter owned and operated a Texaco service station and held the Studebaker and Morris franchises. After selling the service station, Walter founded and operated Watson Plumbing & Heating.

In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, travelling with Ethel and building things for his family in his workshop. Walter will be remembered as an industrious, self-made man who was generous to a fault.

Walter is survived by son Dan (Judy) Watson of Coquitlam; daughter Bonnie (Gerry) Miller of Vernon; five grandchildren: Kayla Dawes of Surrey, Wade (Virginia) Watson of Vancouver, George (Laurene) Watson of Surrey, Greg (Patti) Miller of Calgary, AB and Jennifer (Rob) Carstenson of Edmonton, AB; nine great-grandchildren: William Oakland, Kalina Dawes, Jed Dawes, Jonathan Watson, Ashley Watson, Stephanie Watson, Eric Miller, Kyle Miller and Kayleen Carstenson; three brothers: Tom Watson of Sidney, Alan (Elaine) Watson of White Rock, and Leonard (Sheila) Watson of Stettler, AB.; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; two infant children; one brother: Archie; and three sisters: Jessie, Florence and Bessie.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow in the Pleasant Valley Tea Room. In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, 2101 – 32 Street, Vernon, BC V1T 5L2.
