We are sad to announce the passing of Walter Hlina at the age of 88 on Friday evening, February 16, 2018. Wally was born April 3, 1929 to Joseph and Cecilia Hlina in Notch Hill, BC. He married Anna Bramble on April 29, 1950 and had three sons and three daughters.
Wally enjoyed a long career with Noca Dairy before purchasing property on North Fork Road in Cherryville and building Hlina Ranch. He farmed tirelessly but happily for many years, creating wonderful friendships and being very productive.
Wally's love of fishing took him on many trips to Nimpo Lake, Kitimat, Bella Coola, and Woods Lake, with his good friends and neighbor. His moose hunting expeditions to the Prince George area and Thanksgiving at Lynx Lake were a highlight for him.
After he and Anna traveled extensively for many years to several sunny spots all over the world, the purchase of a cabin on the Westside of Okanagan Lake came to be a very special place for Wally. After hours of work tending the garden, he would settle into his chair on the deck for happy hour with friends and family and gaze out over the lake.
Wally was predeceased by his parents; brothers: Martin, Frank, and Joe; sister, Anne; wife, Anna; daughter, Shirley; and daughter-in- law, Wendy.
He is survived by his brother, Bill; sister, Sophie; and his remaining five children: Linda (Don) Jones, Ron Hlina, Bill (Colleen) Hlina, Bob (Linda) Hlina, and Lori (Shane) Sawan; 18 grandchildren, 24+ great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Wally was a man of common sense, honest and hard working. He loved the great outdoors and had a down-to-earth approach to life. He was always there for his children and their families. His strength and determination will remain a truly positive role model for his family for years to come.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Schubert Center.
