WICHER "WAYNE" SMIT

SMIT, Wicher “Wayne”

Wicher “Wayne” Smit passed away in North Okanagan Hospice House on November 10, 2014. Wayne is survived by his loving wife Heather to whom he was married to for 47 years; children Andrew and Rosanne (Greg); grandsons Dustin and Aaron (Jami); great-granddaughter Avery; brother Wicher of Wolvega, Netherlands and numerous nieces and nephews and their respective families. Wayne was predeceased by his sister Meintje and brother Aaldert. Wayne was born into a dairy farming family at Steenwijkerwold, Netherlands on May 25th, 1934. In 1956, he immigrated to Canada. He worked on farms, in landscaping, in the logging industry, on the railroad and as a truck driver. Wayne and Heather began their own dairy farm in Lumby in 1970. He worked hard but also loved riding his bicycle and motorbike, spending time with his horses and dogs, skiing and snowboarding and travelling to far off countries. He and Heather enjoyed Holstein conventions and shows across Canada. After retiring from farming, he and Heather enjoyed rock-hounding all over BC, fishing and travelling. He volunteered with therapeutic horse-riding, disabled skiing and at the local gleaners association and rode his bicycle a total of a thousand kilometers in five separate rides to raise money for the BC Lung Association. Wayne was passionate about doing development work in Nicaragua with local organization Fuente de Vida. He travelled to Nicaragua many times to construct and install water filters, install solar lights in houses, help out at the orphanage, distribute seeds to local farmers and otherwise improve life for those less fortunate in rural impoverished areas of north west Nicaragua. Wayne was a practical joker, fearless, resilient and determined, had a heart of gold and deep compassion for those less fortunate. Flowers gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may make a donation to a charity of their choice or do something kind for someone less fortunate. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11am, Saturday, December 6th, 2014 at the Vernon Christian Fellowship (4506 29th Street, Vernon, BC) with Rev. Dr. Teresa Charlton officiating.
