Wiepke Kuipers of Vernon, B.C. passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 20 at North Okanagan Hospice. Wiep spent the last two weeks of his life at home and at hospice surrounded by family and friends. He was 81.
At the age of 23 Wiep immigrated to Canada in 1957 with his wife Nieske and his brother-in-law Peter. Without knowing English and with 98 dollars between them, their Canadian adventure began. After teaching himself to read and write English, Wiep fulfilled another dream by becoming a Canadian citizen. He went on to create a successful carpentry business lasting several decades in Calgary and Fairmont Hot Springs. Wiep’s retirement started in Vernon in 2007.
He was a devoted husband, father, soccer coach and dedicated audience member at his children’s events. He was a cagy cribbage player, a big fan of board games and he barbequed with the best of them.
Wiep is survived by his wife of 58 years Nieske, daughter Anita and sons Ron and Jeff. He was adored by his five grandchildren who knew him as Opa and he was a fun-loving uncle to the many who called him Oom Wiep.
Donations to North Okanagan Hospice Society appreciated.
