Wilhem (Bill) Gammel

Mr. Wilhem (Bill) Gammel was born on August 1st, 1916 in Morse, Saskatchewan, son of Adam Gammel and Beata Gammel (nee Nein). He was baptized on August 20th, 1916 in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Flowing Well, Saskatchewan and was later confirmed on November 6th, 1932 in the Lutheran Church in Morse, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his mother in February, 1937, his father in December, 1946, one sister as an infant and later two brothers and one sister. Bill received all his schooling in Morse, Saskatchewan and after Confirmation he worked as a farm labourer through his early years. He worked in various places in Saskatchewan but in 1942 he had a very bad accident, having had his left arm torn out by a power take off on a combine. This caused him to be layed up until 1944. When he recovered he went to northern Saskatchewan where his oldest sister lived at that time. He got a job driving a school bus. There were only a few children so it was by car in the summer and by sleigh in the winter. It was not easy. It was there that he met his future wife, Lydia. They were married on July 17th, 1946. The next nine years Bill again did farm work until 1955 when he and his family came to Vernon. He got a job with what is now known as B.C. Hydro and remained with the company until his retirement in 1980. Bill and Lydia then enjoyed lots of traveling throughout Canada and the United States. Bill was called Home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 30th, 2005 and will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lydia, three sons; Les (Marlina) of Duncan, B.C., Ron (Wanda) of Lumby, B.C., and Warren of Calgary, Alberta, five grandchildren; Byron (Kim), Christopher (Natasha), Leanne, Corrina (Derek) and Lyle, four great-grand-daughters; Taylor, Avery, Teagan and Riley, one great-grandson; Benjamin, one sister; Bertha Kupper and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Monday, January 9th, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Roy White officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
