Willem (Wim) Frederik Ladan died peacefully in his sleep at age 93 on August 10, 2016 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Wim’s wife, Jaapje (Jo) Ladan was deceased on November 14, 2013, and his son Robert Ladan was deceased on March 25, 2014. He will be forever loved and missed by his surviving family: daughters Astrid Norquay, Ingrid (Tom McCahon) Ladan, Esther Ladan, son Eric Ladan, daughter-in-law Lorraine Ladan, granddaughters and grandsons; Lorena (Andrew) Klingel, Alana Norquay, Pamela (Tim) Stringer, Jesse Daniel Norquay, Jessica Ladan, Dylan (Kayla) Ladan, and Natalie Evans; great grandchildren, Ella, Ally and Katie Klingel and Tucker Ladan.

Wim and Jo immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1957 and settled with their four children on Ile Bizard, Quebec. In 1958, their son Eric was born to complete the family of seven.

Wim’s ingenuity, ability, tenacity and work ethic soon found him working for Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE), where he gained the respect of his colleagues by excelling in his field of mechanical engineering. In 1972 Wim was invited to join the Research and Development division for the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing in Ottawa, Ontario. Wim invented many specialized techniques and systems in his career; some are still in use today.

Wim’s most proud achievements were: the love for his wife and his family, his contribution throughout his career which he continued to enjoy until he was 84 years of age, immigrating to Canada and adapting to the French and English language and the many opportunities made available to him and the family, and building the “cottage” on Lac Simon, Quebec where the extended family and friends vacationed for four decades.

In 2008, Wim and Jo relocated from Ottawa to Vernon, BC primarily to benefit from the mild climate offered in the Okanagan Valley area. His two sons had relocated many years prior, so this provided an opportunity to rekindle a closer relationship with “the boys” who had left the nest so many years earlier.

Wim was cremated at Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services in Armstrong, BC on Friday August 12. No funeral or ceremony will be held, as per Wim’s wishes. In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation (2101 32nd Street, Vernon, BC V1T 5L2) or by visiting their website at www.vjhfoundation.org.
