It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of William John Leslie (Les) Bailey after a short illness on October 19, 2011 in Victoria, BC. Les, the eldest of eight children was born December 26, 1911on a farm near Tofield, Alberta to the late John Bailey Jr and Edna Mabel Ferguson Bailey.
Les attended Lindbrook Public School and Tofield High School. He played hockey but excelled at baseball. Les joined the army in 1942 and was overseas for just about four years. He injured his shoulder overseas, which ended his prospects of any kind of sports career. He started working for the City of Edmonton in 1949 and retired as Director of Sewer Maintenance in 1975 at the ripe old age of 55. After retiring Les and his wife Bernice moved to Vernon BC. In 1973 Les became a Jehovah Witness and he became very active serving 26 years as an elder and as the first Secretary in the Okanagan congregation. He was privileged to be the bookkeeper in charge of the finances for the building of the new Assembly Centre in Vernon. His knack for attention to detail came in very handy.
Predeceased by his father John Bailey Jr., mother Edna Mabel Ferguson Bailey, sister Joyce Brimacombe, sister Muriel Thieson, brother Donald Bailey, first wife Christina, second wife Bernice and last wife Eva. Les is survived by his son David (Judy) Bailey, of Calgary, daughter Nora (Richard)Rose of Red Deer, Ray (Alma) Casavant of Burnaby, Gordon (Glenna).
Grandchildren Charlene, Richard, Duain (Sue) of Calgary, Dean Roseof Red Deer, Scott (Kate) Rose of Melbourne, Australia, Guy (Dorine) Casavant , Renee (Wallace) Wood , Mark (Rita) Casavant ,Vance and Trina, Great-grandchildren Jaden and Ethan Rose of Red Deer , Kaylee Casavant, Aaron, Jessica , Megan, Alexandra Wood and Laura Casavant Siblings, brother Ken Bailey of Edmonton, sister Irene Warner (John) of Tofield, sister Alice Cossey of Chipman and brother Arnold (Doreen) (Doady) of Spruce Grove.
A memorial service will be held October 29, 2011, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses 2780Shelbourne, Victoria BC.
