William George Gray

With his loving family by his side both present and in spirit, William George Gray, at the age of eighty-nine years, passed away at Vernon Jubilee Hospital due to complications from a heart attack. George was predeceased by his parents George and Grace. He is survived by his loving wife Vicki Gray and previous wife Sheila Oliver; son Craig Gray, Balfour, BC; daughter Dale (Rick) Thomson, Victoria, BC; grandchildren: Brant Gray (Margaret), Natalie (Blake) Schneider, Melinda (Mat) Federink and great granddaughter Andrea. He is further survived by sisters: Hilda (Harry) Stewart, Bunty (Herb) Gonzalez and numerous nieces and nephews. George was born in Edmonton, AB and at the age of seven moved to Capilano, North Vancouver where he spent his youth. September 4, 1940 he entered active service in the Naval Forces of Canada as a Petty Officer, trained at Royal Roads in Victoria and was commissioned Chief Petty Officer after serving on the Bermuda Run. George saw active service in the North Atlantic escorting convoys and later transferred to Halifax, NS where he worked in the naval shipyards until his discharge August 21, 1945. After discharge George had his contracting business, Gray Construction, and a cabinet and custom furniture shop, Carpentry Craft, in Dundarave, West Vancouver. Later he sold real estate, joined Investors Syndicate and was production manager for Canadian Art Prints Inc. Before moving to Vernon in 2001, George and Vicki were full time RV’ers spending winters in Arizona and summers at Loon Lake in the Cariboo where many happy days were spent fishing, hiking and forming enduring friendships. In respecting George’s wishes, there will be no formal service. In the spring a memorial will be held with the date to be announced at that time. The family wishes to thank BC Ambulance Service, Dr. Botha, the Palliative Care staff on 2 West at VJH who made George’s final journey peaceful. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make a donation in George’s memory to the Salvation Army, VJH Tower of Care or charity of choice.
