1918 – 2009
Bill Whitehead passed away at his home in Armstrong, B.C. on May 15, 2009 at the age of 91. Bill was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on January 2, 1918 to Frank and Lily (Simpson) Whitehead of Tompkins, Saskatchewan. Dad spent most of his youth on a farm and cattle ranch in the Tompkins/Maple Creek area. In 1936, due to the economic depression and years of drought, the family found it necessary to move to British Columbia; settling on a farm in Hullcar in the Armstrong/Spallumcheen area. In 1941 Dad married our mother, Cora Andrews in Kelowna and together they raised 2 children. Dad
joined the Canadian Scottish in 1941 and spent the next four years in England during WW II. Upon discharge in 1945, he returned to Kelowna, working at various jobs until he acquired work at Crowe’s Auctions. This led to years of owning a second-hand business in Rutland and auctioneering in Kelowna and Armstrong. In 1976 he and mom moved to Armstrong to retire. He continued his interest in flea markets, yard sales and historical writing.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Frank (1961) and Lily (1991), his wife, Cora (1985), his companion, Minnie Johnston (2003). Left to mourn is his children, Fay (Dave) Atkins and Frank Whitehead. Also, grandchildren, Kelvin, Allan and Terance Okert and Jennifer Whitehead, two step-grandchildren, Mike and Paul Atkins, and six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jessica, Saphira, Matthew Okert and twins, Julia and Tyson Atkins. Also feeling his loss will be a number of cousins and friends, especially Paul and Louise Eichinger and Hughie Starkey. We wish to thank them for all their care and attention they gave our father.
Dad’s main interests were family and area history and the Odd Fellows Lodge. In the 1950s, he joined the Okanagan Historical Society and wrote a number of articles for their Annual reports. Also, he took an active interest in his Lodge and became Provincial Grand Master in 1984.
A Memorial tea will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in Armstrong at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Interment at the Armstrong/Spallumcheen Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Personal Alternative Funeral Services in Armstrong (250-546-7237).
