We regret to announce the death at The Gateby on July 28, 2003, of William Walker (“Walkie”) MacNeil, at the age of 89 years. Walkie was born in Westville, N.S., attended Battle Drill School in Coldstream as an instructor in 1943, and following his wartime service overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders (infantry), returned to make Vernon his home in 1947. In 1993, Walkie was made Vernon’s Good Citizen and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, as his life revolved around community service. He was Past District Deputy in the Masonic Order, having been a member for over 50 years. Walkie was a member of the Sons of Scotland and of the Royal Canadian Legion also for half a century. He served with the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years also, and was very active in sports as a younger man, being instrumental in setting up ballteams in the area. Walkie was predeceased by a brother, Herbie, and a sister, Kay Roy. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Anne; son David (Sherri) and grandchildren Duncan and Devon. He is also survived by sisters-in-law; Jean (Michael) Chennell and Della MacNeil and numerous extended family members. Cremation will be followed by a Celebration of Life Service, to be held on Friday, August 1, at 2:00 P.M., at Trinity United Church, with Mr. Brian Jackson officiating. Friends wishing to do so may make donations in memory of Walkie to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Endowment Fund, 2101 – 32nd St., Vernon, V1T 9Z9.
