EDITORIAL: Fire service remains strong

Vernon residents may wonder what’s actually going on at their fire hall.

Vernon residents may wonder what’s actually going on at their fire hall.

It’s been learned that Jack Blair is leaving as deputy fire chief after being with the department since 2011, while Wayne Price, the current Cranbrook fire chief, has been hired to perform some duties here. This comes just a few months after it was learned that fire chief Keith Green is on leave, deputy chief Lawrie Skolrood retired suddenly and David Lind was hired as interim chief.

On the surface, residents may see this quick turnover of staff as an indication of challenges behind the scenes. And unfortunately some of the speculation is a direct result of process. Under legislation, the City of Vernon cannot disclose any specific details related to personnel.

However, while administrative changes are occurring, residents should remain confident in their fire department.

“There isn’t a huge overhaul in the fire department,” said Mayor Akbal Mund, adding the city is responding to the retirement of long-time employees who were at a stage in their lives that allowed them to retire.

Along with Lind having considerable experience, residents should remember that the department has dedicated firefighters both full-time and volunteers. They are ready to jump into action when an emergency occurs.

Fires will continue to be fought and medical incidents and accidents will remain a priority. Nothing will change for residents in need.
