Vernon School District trustees need to reassure public over board office project

There’s no question that the Vernon School District’s administration office has seen better days.

Built in 1972, the facility is unable to keep up with the modern needs of the district, meaning there are employees in spaces never intended for them, such as the basement. Water pours through the roof during rain, heating and ventilation is poor and there are reports of staff being constantly ill. Outside, a series of portables are used for offices, but they lack washrooms.

It has been described as the worst facility the district owns, and given that reputation, something obviously has to be done. Safe working conditions are paramount, especially given the important work board office staff does to support teachers and students.

However, trustees were right to consider how the renovation project will be perceived by residents as similar projects in other communities across B.C. have been a public relations nightmare.

Trustees and district administrators have to reassure parents, teachers, principals and rank-and-file taxpayers that while the new board office is necessary, it will not have a negative impact on the financial resources available to schools.

As a result, it was important that trustees identify where the board renovation money will come from — international student revenue, excess maintenance and transportation funds, property sale proceeds and annual facility grants.

Ultimately, no one begrudges capital projects that create efficiencies and ensure worker health, but it’s how the process proceeds that matters.
