Falkland receives good response for First Responder volunteers. Westwold...Not so much

Some time ago you very kindly published a request from the Falkland/Westwold First Responders for volunteers and I am happy to say we received a good response, except for Westwold.

As it is a small town there are not a large base of people who are available. As we cover both towns with emergency service it is crucial we get people available from both towns.

As the weather has been mild, there haven’t been as many road accidents which has been easier to service.

The first heavy snowfall it will be a different picture.  For those unfamiliar with the work of the Responders, we assist the ambulance personnel when they get called out for a medical emergency.

Both these towns have no medical services so we totally rely on the ambulances to serve us.  Another problem we have is that we receive no government funding for the work we do.

To provide the service and have to go out looking for funding is a double jeopardy. We were dispatched on 43 calls in 2011, 21 were motor vehicle accidents.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continuous support in 2011 and wish everyone a happy and healthy 2012.
