Garbage cleanup needed in downtown Vernon

Senior loves her city but disappointed in inconsistent clean ups and Polson Park work

Community chaplain Chuck Harper (left) and John Howard Society volunteer Eric Denison clean up garbage near the train station plaza in downtown Vernon. Residents, business owners, politicians and volunteers from all walks of life turned up for the downtown community clean up to make their city shine following the recent snow melt that has revealed garbage, debris and even needles around town. Are the employers on a work to rule program or what?

When I want to walk downtown I am not happy having to walk by/near overflowing garbage cans. Do we not have any pride?

Of course we do! I think the city wants to bring in business and tourists to have a greater tax base. I love the downtown stores. They are close to the home I live in but really there is so much inconsistency. I love that every Monday morning the men pick up even every cigarette butt! But why are the garbage cans full and overflowing for what seems like a week?

Don't tell me why, I don't want to know why and I don't want to know any pathetic excuses! I want the city I know and love, the city I call home, because it is my home. I was born here in the Jubilee Hospital in 1947.

Yes there are way more people, yes there are so many down and outers but who is shirking their job at city hall? Thre isn't a strike.

We have money for all the construction projects or maybe we are going into debt to do these things? I am very happy to see these projects get done.

And while I am on my soap box, whoever okayed the devastation in Polson Park? I never had a vote to approve that. When I see the mess in Polson Park I want to vomit. I wonder what that project cost? Those trees weren't all rotten; there is no pine beetle throughout the park. Heritage homes need permission to do heavy landscaping. Who gave permission for the devastation in Polson Park?

If I am on a plane and I vomit an attendant is there very quickly to help the victim and someone else is there quickly to clean it up.

My point - who is responsible to clean up the messes in whatever corner of the city?

Municipal elections come every few years. Who will address some of these issues? We don't want to hear from anyone who doesn't have the backbone to take care of these things. Man up or woman up as the case may be and take responsibility. No hot air please. We can see through that so perfectly.

A proud Vernonite
