Health concerns

Health concerns raised for cyclists who brave congested and polluted roads

In all the controversy over the introduction of cycle lanes in Vernon, I have yet to read or hear anything about hazards to the health of cyclists as they move around our city.

Why any cyclist would want to expose his/her respiratory system to the poorest quality air in the province of B.C. is beyond me. Are riders not aware of the damaging particulate matter being sucked into their lungs as vehicle after vehicle passes them, spewing out its exhaust fumes in their faces?

Yet to this point I have not seen any cyclist wearing a mask to filter out the pollutants in the air.

A few weeks ago I had a interesting chat with the city hall technician in charge of designing the cycle grid, during which I asked her when we could expect to see designated cycle lanes in the downtown core.  Her response? “There will be no cycle lanes in the downtown core.”

So, to those riders who need to travel to downtown – once you’re there, you’re on your own when it comes to navigating the most congested area in our region.  Take care.
