High praise for duck rescuers

On May 18, I was on my way home from work at about 4:45 p.m. and I saw a few people on the corner of 43rd Avenue and 25th Street dealing with a momma duck and her ducklings.

I stopped to help. It turns out when momma was crossing the street with her 10-plus ducklings, six of them had fallen through the storm drain.

Four of these wonderful people were trying to get the ducklings that had not fallen in, and the mother duck, into a plastic box, no small feat as momma would not leave her babies. She was not very fond of the idea of being caught but they got it done.

A lady from the condo units close by had gone and got the box. Another lady dashed off to the dollar store and came back with a long-handled net. She delivered the net and wished all of them well as she had to dash off to pick up her son. She left us with the net.

Meanwhile, calls were made to appropriate agencies but to no avail. We were able to get the storm drain off and rescued all of the ducklings.

The lovely young lady that led the cause, as in her words, "I'm not leaving them," said she would take them off to the Polson Park ponds.

I asked if she needed help and she declined. I then decided I would like to be part of the delivery moment. I waited at Polson Park for half-an-hour but never did see that part of the event.

So I would like to thank all of the folks that participated in the rescue and would love to hear the happy ending. Please let us know via letter to editor.

I have visions of a loose, very mad, momma duck in her car.

Hopefully all is well and she will share the outcome with us. Bless all of your hearts that assisted in this rescue effort.
