Wetland lost

Resident upset about plans to extend 20th Street in Vernon

What a shame that we are losing another wetland in the Vernon area.

It is hard to believe that the ministries of environment and transportation are even considering putting a road through this wetland area.

The Okanagan Valley has been losing too many marshes and wetlands over the years due to development. We all know how important they are, and several organizations have been working for years to educate the public for protection, and even creating new wetlands at great cost. I find it astounding that our local MLA, Eric Foster, is saying that, " It's been looked at very carefully," and the ministries plans for minimal impact in this area.

This area is fairly small so any time you put a new road with a sidewalk, it won't be minimal impact. A big portion of land will be taken out. The construction alone will destroy this area, and leave a small remnant of wetland on either side of the road. There don't seem to be any concerns either for all of the wildlife that will be displaced.

I find it hard to believe that there's not a peep from city hall about this issue. No councillors or regional directors have come out in defence of all of these people that voiced their opposition against this project, according to all of the letters to The Morning Star. I just wonder, maybe, are we catering to new developments going on in this area?
