On Jan. 6, The Morning Star reported that Vernon was chosen by Expedia as one of 17 Canadian cities that is a must visit in 2017, citing our wonderful four season climate, beautiful scenery and the multitude of varied activities to be enjoyed by visitors.
Who can argue? But what Expedia failed to note was the citizens of Vernon, whose friendliness and generous nature are the heart and sole of our city.
On Jan. 23, my wife and I were celebrating a birthday at a local restaurant when we received an emergency phone call that our house was on fire. We rushed home to discover our garage in flames, with huge black clouds belching skyward, visible to many residents.
This traumatic incident, which totally upset our idyllic life, was featured on the front page of The Morning Star. As we stood in the street with nothing but the clothes on our back, the situation seemed surreal, like a bad dream from which we would hopefully awaken. We are grateful for the prompt and efficient actions of the neighbours who phoned 911 and the rapid response by both police and the Vernon Fire Department, who went out of their way to assure us everything would work out.
They arranged for victim services that made sure we had a place to stay and funds for necessities.
Okanagan Restoration provided around the clock security as well as assurances that they would return first thing the next morning to begin the process of recovery and clean up. Everyone in the neighbourhood volunteered help, a play to stay, emergency supplies, a hot meal and support in any way they could. We were overwhelmed by their response.
The next morning, a total stranger gave us a lead which resulted in a place to stay for the next eight months to a year. Of those who saw The Morning Star article, their reaction was unanimous — “We are sorry for your loss. How can we help?” Friends and strangers alike have provided us with everything we need to begin putting our lives back together again.
What has been the most help are the caring hugs so freely given.
It is unclear how the fire started but the intense heat and heavy smoke completely destroyed the garage and all of its contents, including a brand new car. Although the house was protected by a fire wall, it suffered heavy smoke damage and will require major reconstruction and restoration.
The good news is that nobody was hurt and insurance will repair the house. In time, we will be able to return home and to our great neighbourhood.
Although we agree with Expedia that Vernon holds a special interest for tourists, it is also a wonderful city to call home. A special thank you to everyone for your expressions of concern and offers of help. It means the world to us.
We are very proud to say we live in such a caring community.
