Aces trump U19 playdown

Salmon Arm Aces win Under 19 Girls zone fastball playoffs last weekend in Vernon.

The Salmon Arm Aces emerged as the top team from the Under 19 Girls zone fastball playoffs last weekend in Vernon.

Playing in soggy conditions, the Aces outlasted three other teams – Summerland Scorch, Kelowna Warriors and Vernon Heat – to advance to U19 provincials, July 6-8, in Sooke.

Salmon Arm stopped Summerland 12-3 in the championship game, giving Aces’ coach Bill Coldwell his first trip to provincials in a long and successful coaching career.

“They really deserve the chance to be there,” said Jodi Rolke, Vernon minor fastball president. “Bill is an incredible coach and he has waited for this opportunity for many years. They will do awesome and I hope they enjoy the experience.”

The sun made an appearance in the first set of games Saturday, with Kelowna grounding Vernon and Salmon Arm knocking off Summerland.

In round two, Summerland brushed back Vernon and Salmon Arm stuffed Kelowna. Round three had to be stopped after three innings due to the torrential downpour that hit Vernon Saturday afternoon.

The decision was made to go straight through to the playoff round on Sunday morning, with the Aces taking first in the round-robin, the Warriors second, Scorch third and the Heat fourth.

Sunday saw better conditions, with Salmon Arm earning a forfeit win over Vernon, and Summerland defeating Kelowna 12-8.

The Vernon minor fastball season wraps up on the July 7-8 weekend with the U12 regional jamboree in Sicamous, with Blair Campbell’s Panthers representing Vernon.
