Athletes break meet marks

North Okanagan athletes broke meet records at the recent Battle of the Border Track and Field meet at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops.

The event featured athletes from B.C. and Alberta schools.

Jacob Taylor of Armstrong’s Pleasant Valley Secondary obliterated the junior boys (Grades 9-10) javelin record with a toss of 52.72 metres. The old standard was 41.22m, set in 2014.

Josie Sexsmith from Lumby’s Charles Bloom Secondary set a new meet standard in the junior girls javelin with a heave of 32.77m, smashing the mark of 31.12m set a year ago.

Trinity Hansma of PVSS won the senior girls high jump with a mark of 1.68m, beating her own meet record of 1.65m set last year. Czarina Wisse of Vernon Secondary was second in the same event with a leap of 150m.

Nick Saxon of Pleasant Valley won the junior boys long jump with a new mark of 5.79m (Ben Molitwenik of Vernon Christian School was fourth at 5.17m, Nathan Wong of VSS was seventh at 4.95m).

Braden Kersey from Seaton Secondary smashed the junior boys 1,500m steeplechase mark of 5:04:01, setting a new standard of 4:58:63 in winning the race.

Other athletes winning gold includes Jared Simpson of Fulton Secondary, who won the Grade 8 boys 200m race in 25.46 seconds. Torin Andrews of Seaton (2:26.12) beat teammate Gage Stoll (2:27:80) in the Grade 8 boys 800m race. Porter Trevelyan of VSS was fourth (2:40.39).

Stoll won the Grade 8 boys 1,500m in 5:17.64.

Vernon Secondary won the Grade 8 boys 4 x 400m relay.

Wilson McDowell of Fulton Secondary won the Grade 8 boys long jump with a jump of 4.38m. Nic Barbosa of A.L. Fortune was third (3.70m).

Jacob Molitwenik of Vernon Christian tied for first in the senior boys high jump as he and Bjorn Savoie of Calgary jumped 1.79m. Rhys Larsen of VSS was fouroth (1.60m).

Jordan Campagnolo of A.L. Fortune won the senior boys shot put at 12.39m.

Samantha Loewen of VSS won the senior girls 1,500m steeplechase in 6:44.07

Kendel Rogers, VSS (third senior girls pole vault); Mariah Feist, Vernon Christian School (second, senior girls triple jump); Jacquelyn Kolotylo, A.L. Fortune (second senior girls javelin); Saxon, PVSS (third junior boys 100m); Taylor, PVSS (second junior boys shot put, third junior boys discus);
