Austin explodes for hat trick

Sasha Austin connected for her first goal of the season and then completed the hat trick as the Vernon Strikers ambushed host Salmon Arm 13-2 in Under 10 ringette play Saturday at the Shaw Centre.

First-year players Madison Edgar and Emily Gilman had strong two-way games playing centre with both girls earning deuces. Aimee Skinner potted one goal and assisted on other snipes by Brianna Visser, Alecia Hughes and Caryss Hill. Sydney Lewis and Lauren Cooke also supplied singles.

Ally Hobenschield and Sierra Fernley were bold on defence in front of a stellar Victoria Schultz.

The Vernon Voltage stormed back with two late goals to salvage a 5-5 tie with the Kelowna Jr. Chiefs in U12 action Sunday in Kelowna.

Scoring leader Hannah (Montana) McMorran led the Voltage attack with a hat trick, while Chayse Krause chipped in two goals, the last to tie the game with a minute left.

Tristan DeWitt rounded out the attack with 1+2, while Shaila Austin pocketed two helpers and Sierra Lochhead and Astrid Beaty one assist each.

Goaltender Rhys Taylor-Hawes, who usually plays defence, had a great game, making several key saves down the stretch.

The Vernon Junior A Rush lost 4-3 to the Kelowna Jr. Belles in a super fast, physical tilt Sunday.

Garrett Adams was superb in goal. Courtney Bacon scored unassisted to start the Rush attack and Saige Woodliffe had two goals, one from Kendra Ostafie and one from Emma Carter, to keep Vernon tied until the final minutes.

The Vernon Flare gained a 3-3 tie with Salmon Arm in U12 Petite play Sunday at Priest Valley Arena.

Kirsten Ho pulled the hat trick for the Flare, assists going to Samantha Shaw, Bryn Korol and Abby Sveistrup. Offensive help came from Jasmine Horton, Chloe Scaber and Ashley Wadsworth, while Miah Cohen and Brooklyn Tardiff were marvellous defensively in front of Kaila Summerfelt.

The Vernon Ice Bunnies split a home and home series with Salmon Arm, losing 8-6 Saturday afternoon at PV and winning 10-2 Sunday at the Shaw Centre.

Natasha Vienneau (3), Rhys Leibel, Lucia Manton and Danika Vienneau supplied the goals in the loss. Manton, with a deuce, Kiera Horton, Devyn Hildebrand, Danika Vienneau, Natasha Vienneau, Rhys Leibel, Theryn Petty, Ava Gillman and Rory Lang produced goals in the Shuswap.
