Big turnout for Vernon Lawn Bowling Club’s ‘try it’ day

The club invited people of all ages and abilities to try their hand at lawn bowling Saturday

People of all ages came out to Vernon’s Polson Park Saturday to try their hand at lawn bowling.

The Vernon Lawn Bowling Club held its “try it” day May 18, inviting people to their green to learn how to play the fun and social sport.

“Anybody from the community can come in, use our green, use our equipment and learn a little bit about lawn bowling and have fun,” said club president Dawn Perkins.

Members of the club walked newcomers to the sport through the basics of lawn bowling, teaching them where to start a game, throwing the jack, delivering forehand and backhand shots, scoring and other basic skills.

It was a sunny and warm day around 11 a.m. onward Saturday, and as a result, Perkins said the turnout was “amazing.”

“We thought because it started out cold and rainy that we were going to be here by ourselves, but we’re full to the rafters.”

People who join the Vernon Lawn Bowling Club can take advantage of free lessons.

“Just walk in and ask for some help and we will give some coaching and get you started,” Perkins said.

Perkins said members bowl socially on a drop-in basis, with no leagues or teams, but there’s still a competitive edge to lawn bowling at the club.

The lawn bowling green in Polson Park opened fairly early this year, on April 10. The lawn bowling season will run until the end of September.

“Our green is fantastic, it’s in really good shape, we’re very proud of it,” Perkins remarked. “A fellow named Mo takes care of it and he does an excellent job.”

Families, individuals and members of other lawn bowling clubs came by for “try it” day.

“I love being out here when everybody’s having a good time playing. You’re out in the sunshine, it’s not terribly strenuous, but you’re active,” Perkins said. “And it’s social, very social.”
