Dr. Lee’s Dental scored once in each half to brush back the AF Blazers 2-0 in North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association play Tuesday night at Marshall Field #4.
Dr. Lee’s, who were left with just 10 players when Bobbi Cormier got hurt after a hard tackle, opened the scoring when Irene Arrotta set up Andi King with a great through ball.
In second half, Lisa Arrotta boomed a goalie kick to King who passed up to Jacquie Hansen for a low shot past keeper Katie Hatten. Stephanie Wilson and Irene Arrotta showed composure distributing the ball in the middle.
Hatten denied Hansen with a sprawling save on a penalty kick to keep it close.
With only five returnees, the revamped Blazers had solid efforts from forwards Jen Moen, Carissa Morneau and Shantell Hayhurst, but were unable to convert on their scoring chances.
Amber Maltman, Jessica Brewis and Janna Cummings were strong on defence.
In the other Div. 1 fixture, Salmon Arm’s Glenn Power outlasted the Little Tex Outlaws 2-1 on Marshall #2.
The evenly played game remained scoreless until the final 10 minutes when Glenn Power opened the scoring. Five minutes later, the Outlaws’ Kira Lee put a long ball in over the keeper’s head.
Glenn Power delivered the go-ahead goal with just two minutes remaining.
Outlaws had a strong showing in the middle from Lee and Jasmine Tucker. Jordan Mercer was solid in the back with strong support from Kristy Anderson, Anita Rea and Stacey Cover.
Controllers close down pub crew
In Masters Division play Tuesday, the shorthanded Controllers squeaked out a 1-0 win over host Setter’s Pub in Salmon Arm.
Starting with only nine players, the Controllers were up to full strength in the second half and proceeded to dominate the play. With the game still scoreless in the late going, Michele Wernicke took Jenny Currie’s corner kick, volleyed it with her right foot, then turned and drilled it with her left past the startled Setter’s keeper.
In the first half, Controllers’ netminder Michelle Embleton stopped consecutive penalty shots (the referee ordered a re-take after a line violation) as part of her second straight shutout performance.
Ang Durfeld cracked a shot off the crossbar just before the break, and fullback Brandie Hunter drove a 22-yarder off the post early in the second half.
Despite a tireless effort by their backline, Seasons Sistas bowed 6-1 to the youthful TED United on Marshall #5.
Sherry Wiebe kept the Seasons’ defensive line unified with strong leadership, and the forward corps of Becky Birbilis, Coco Fair, Keri Story and newcomers Wendy Horner and Kateri Mills were relentless in their drive.
In the second half, the Sista’s got on the board when Leslie Williams deftly fed a through ball to speedster Kim Sylvestre, who, despite playing injured, put a beauty past the United goalkeeper.
Longhorn Impact (formerly Okanagan Impact) buzzed Vernon Square Liquor Store NOU 1-0 on Marshall #3.
Longhorn dominated the play with amazing offence, great passing and strong distribution. Tina Garrison scored the winner in the second half, Myra McEwan getting the assist. Derri Cooper earned the shutout with several amazing saves.
On Marshall #1 Tuesday, Vernon Chick Kickers recorded their second straight 4-0 win, this time over Rosters.
Melissa Jacobs opened the scoring with a 30-yard hail Mary from the back line, and Crystal Bergman cut across 18 and crossed a nice shot in over the keeper’s head to close out the first-half scoring.
Jen Sorochuck converted a great pass from Kelly Challen to put the Chicks up 3-0 early in the second half, while Jacobs converted her second of the game after receiving a heads-up pass from Jenny Garnett.
Michelle Johnson, who gave birth just three months ago, showed great form and ball distribution, while new grandma Charlene Johnson and Bergman earned the shutout.
