Vernon’s Kirsten Dodds scored her fourth goal of the season as the UBC Okanagan Heat grounded the visiting Quest Kermodes of Squamish 3-1 in PACWEST women’s soccer play Sunday.
Defender Hayley Carlson (2nd year, Red Deer) netted her first of the year and forward Taylor Candelario (1st year, Honolulu) added her second of the season as the Heat won their fourth straight.
The Heat’s first goal happened early on a lucky break, as Carlson, was hauled down in the box in the sixth minute. She buried the penalty kick.
Quest equalized in the 38th minute on a goal by Brianna Powrie (2nd year, Kamloops).
The Heat were re-energized in the second half by a gorgeous goal off the foot of Dodds in the 60th minute. Deep in the Quest zone, Dodds remained composed and danced around two Quest defenders and the Quest keeper to put the ball away.
UBCO shut down the Langara Falcons 2-0 Saturday with midfielder Michelle Smith (2nd year, Vernon) scoring 15 minutes into the second half.
Lindsey Briggs (3rd year, Delta) followed shortly after, tipping in her fourth goal of the season off of a cross from Dodds.
“A fantastic weekend for us and a great game again today,” said Heat head coach Claire Paterson after Sunday’s win.
In men’s soccer, third-year Austin Jones pulled the hat trick as the Heat notched their first win of the season, 3-2 over the Kermodes.
Jones began his offensive assault early, scoring in the eighth minute, and then again in the 35th minute off a nice pass from Jorden Leib (2nd year, Bellingham). Jones then scored in the 48th minute on a great feed by Zach Donaldson-Hall (5th year, Kamloops).
