Elite triathlon talent takes on Apple

Some of Canada’s finest triathletes will be racing in the 29th annual Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon this morning in Kelowna.

Some of Canada’s finest triathletes will be racing in the 29th annual Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon this morning in Kelowna.

Among them are three high-profile athletes in two-time Olympic medal winner Simon Whitfield of Victoria, 26-year-old Kyle Jones of Oakville, Ont. and 22-year-old Edmonton native Paula Findlay.

Findlay, ranked top-three in the world, is coming off a 29th-place showing in the ITU Triathlon World Championship Series Race in London, testing her recovery from a hip injury.

Jones and Whitfield turned in a solid performance at the same event in London. Jones finished as the top Canuck in 19th place in one hour, 52 minutes, 10 seconds. Whitfield, the defending Apple champion, clocked in at 1:52:23 to take 23rd.

Elite triathlete from eleven countries will participate in the Kelowna ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup, also hosted by the Kelowna Apple Triathlon.

Nearly 2,000 athletes of all ages and abilities are expected to compete over the weekend.
